JMH recently took over a multi-tenant residential site in Norwich where the client had spent good money on a
high-end CCTV system, yet it was completely failing to meet their needs.
JMH quickly spotted the flaws. The only way anyone could view the camera feeds was by
squeezing into a cramped, dark CCTV cupboard. Worse still, while the live view looked crisp and clear, the
recorded footage was utterly useless – fuzzy pictures, no definition and impossible to identify anyone from.
The previous installer had forced the system to record continuously at the lowest possible resolution just to
meet the required 30-day retention period.
They had the hardware, but zero usability.
Here is how JMH transformed this compromised system into a fully functional security setup:
● Remote Access First: Using a Wi-Fi repeater (easily picked up from the John Lewis next door!), we
quickly established a dedicated, high-speed wireless link to the internet. This immediately freed the
client from the equipment cupboard, allowing remote live viewing and playback from their own devices.
● Network Time Sync: We configured the system to sync with an Internet Time Protocol (NTP) server.
This provides accurate, tamper-proof timestamps which are critical if video footage ever needs to be
used as evidence.
● Maximised Picture Quality: We bumped up the recording settings from a grainy 720p up to full 4K
resolution. This ensures that the cameras capture the crisp detail they were designed to record.
● Smart Motion Detection: Instead of wasting storage on endless, empty footage, we set the system to
record only when motion is detected. We also masked out background noise like swaying trees and
bushes to prevent false triggers. This means that the system only records when something is actually
happening – saving storage and, more importantly, the time that would be wasted searching through
pointless footage.
● Pre & Post-Event Buffering: We programmed the recorder to capture 30 seconds before and 30
seconds after any detected motion, ensuring no content is missed. This provides an extra layer of
reassurance to the client.
In short, instead of trawling through hours of blank footage in a tiny broom closet, the client can now instantly
pinpoint motion events in crystal-clear 4K, right from their phone or desktop.
Why should you choose enterprise-grade security systems and not SMB systems?
Investing in enterprise-grade security cameras protects your property in the most efficient, reliable and
effective way. SMB equipment (small and medium business) may initially seem cheaper and simpler to install
but, over time, an enterprise-grade system is more cost effective and will save you from many irritating
upgrades.
However, top-tier hardware is only as good as the technician who installs your system; the skill of the
technician holding the drill ultimately determines whether that system fully protects you or simply gives you a
false sense of safety.
Why should you get JMH to install your security system?
At JMH, we pride ourselves on applying the skills we have developed in over 45 years of installing security
systems. We will ensure that your enterprise-grade security system is installed correctly giving you peace of
mind that your business property is secure and that, if you need it, the footage you have is accurate, detailed
and fit for purpose.
JMH apply common sense, logic and experience to make sure every system they install is bespoke to that
business. They understand that, just as no two businesses or properties are the same, no two security
systems will be the same either.
Great security isn't just about the equipment you buy—it's about how that equipment is configured to work for
you.
